Game Website Wurm Offers 10,000 Euro Reward for Hackers behind DDoS

Free online game website Wurm is offering a 10,000 euro ($13,000) reward for details on the culprits behind the recent DDoS attack that affected its servers, according to The Hacker News. The multiplayer game was hacked hours after their 1.2 update.

“Shortly after today’s update we were the target of a DDOS attack and our hosting provider had to pull us off the grid for now,” game developer Rolf Jansson said.

“We will be back as soon as possible but things are out of our hands since their other customers are affected. As we wrote in a previous news post we are planning on changing hosting anyways which should improve things for the future. We can offer 10 000 Euro for any tips or evidence leading to a conviction of the person responsible for this attack.”

The developer said they were looking at migrating Wurm’s hosting before the DDoS attack. The game is expected to run on the new servers today for better overall performance.

Gamers reacted to the breach on the platform’s forum.

“A DDOS attack is considered a ‘dumb’ attack. It is really not a hack at all,” a Wurm player said. “Individuals that initiate the attacks are not hackers. They have no special abilities or skill set. The purpose of DDoS attacks are not to steal information but rather to prove a point. They simply control botnets (groups of innocent, unprotected computer users) to show their supposed strength. The truth? They are weak. They are at best, script kiddies, no matter their true age.”

Wurm players explore the game’s world, modify terrain and create their own items and structures.
